Watercolor, oil, monotype are the mediums used by Santa Fe artist Maureen Howles to
produce images varying in style from subjective naturalism to the semi-abstract. Shapes and
colors of the southwestern deserts provide inspiration for the oil paintings,
which tend to take an exploratory approach with improvised color and simplification
of form. The watercolors are generally approached in the more disciplined tradition
of naturalism, with images drawn from the expansive landscapes of the American West.
